Buying a Bike on Gumtree

Buying and selling bikes on Gumtree is quick and easy, and we do a lot behind the scenes at Gumtree to make our site as safe as possible.

Inevitably, there are some bike thieves who use classified sites to sell some stolen items, so here are our top tips to make sure you don’t get caught out.

Tips on buying a bike safely:-

1.        Make sure you have seen a photo of the bike before you make the effort to see it.

2.        Ask the seller questions about where they bought it, and why they’re selling. Do they have an original receipt, or the bike frame number? (You can check the bike frame numbers on ‘bike-check’ websites, such as bikeregister or immobilise)

3.        If you decide to buy, get a receipt for the purchase, which includes the seller’s landline telephone number or an address

4.        And last but not least, if it looks too good to be true, it probably is. If you see an expensive bike with a very low price, then there’s probably a reason for this.
