Since its invention in 1817, the bike has been through a few revisions before evolving into the designs we see today. Nor has it always been the easiest or safest way to travel. Take ‘the boneshaker’ for example, which required the rider to run and jump onto the two-wheeled vehicle without the assistance of brakes.
Or ‘the penny farthing’, which offered a wonderfully high sitting position as well as the permanent risk of toppling off on bumpy terrain.
