PayPal Scam Alert

In an effort to keep the community safe on Gumtree, we will update you with any new scamming methods we come across on the internet so that you are aware when dealing in a free market environment.
One popular scamming method currently being used is where the scammer offers to pay the amount via PayPal. When the amount comes through to the seller, it is £0.00. The scammer then states that PayPal is holding the funds until you send the goods to the buyer. You may even receive emails from PayPal that look real, but they are actually fakes. Please forward any suspicious emails to PayPal.
How to avoid this scam:
• PayPal does not hold funds until an item is sent.
• Beware of fake PayPal emails – always check with PayPal if you are unsure.
• Always trade face to face when buying items on Gumtree.
Above all, go with your gut. If you don’t feel good about this transaction, just walk away.

Yup, just had the same happen to me, a Rebecca McMurray emailed me claiming she is in Asia, wants to buy my laptop for a friend stationed there, address in Nigeria etc etc. Thankfully followed my gut instinct which was telling me that it wasnt legit. All the user comments certainly helped too!
HAHAHA. I knew it was suspicious.
Someone (named barbra… spelling gave it all away) wants to ‘buy’ my car…and at first i thought “wierd… but paypal is safe”
But the more i thought about it, the wierder i thought it was. Why ship a korean car…to CHINA!?? So i googled, and found this.

Been receiving mail from a Jenny White asking for my wedding dress to be sent as a surprise to someone in Africa for Valentine’s Day. Was immediately sceptical. They had offered to send £120 just for postage if I gave them my Paypal details. Decided to see what would happen so went through paypal and sent them a money request, just received two emails back from Jenny White and “Paypal” saying money being held until tracking number received…yeah right!!!
One other thing, Jenny White had three different email address, all beginning withe jennywhite90, a gmail.com, a live.co.uk and a rocketmail.com. Very sneaky!!
Also just received another mail from someone claiming his daughter is a missionary in Africa and she also wants my dress, willing to send postage through paypal….ahem!

Hello:
I got an Email from “Laura Jade Paul” (same as MJRider below) wanting to buy a laptop I have for sale on Craigslist here is the e-mail:
Thanks for you reply,i am located in Remsenburg city
in NY,i really need to buy this and send to my
son schooling outside the state, have been trying to buy this on eBay
but is very stressful buying on eBay and i will not want to miss out
on this opportunity so am making you an offer of $450 to rap the sale off.
I will be paying through PAYPAL
because i have a verified account with paypal. So kindly get back with
your paypal email address so i can make payment into your paypal
account.Once payment clears, shipment will be handled by me through my
personal FedEx account,so you don’t have to pay for
shipment.Get back to me if my approval is granted.I would like to see
the pictures please.
In this case the things that caught my attention were offering to pay $100 more than I was asking and the fact that there are pictures up on the craigslist post. I assume this scamer is still active so beware.
Thanks for your time reading this, Mocchi
Be careful I just had some emails which looked convincing enough.

New Scam on Gumtree:
One Mrs C Da Silva otherwies known as bargain fairy posted this ad on gumtree, “White Sony Vaio Laptop with Windows 7″ (ad# 53007671)”
I replied to the ad by email, and then she sent her number, “07815708364″. After a couple of sms texting I transferred 120 quid to the account she gave me: Name: Mrs Da Sila, Bank: Abbey, Acc Number:20827593 Sort code? 090127.
She is also known as bargainprincesca on ebay. Apparently she operates from Sheffield, South Yorkshire.
After the money transfer ur guess is right – she disappeared and not answering text or emails or calls.
Now am getting my bank to reverse the transfer of funds.
So becareful you have been warned.
Today I have been defrauded of 120 quid on gumtree. A lady who calls herself mrs c da silva otherwise known as “bargain fairy” posted a gumtree ad for used laptop, “White Sony Vaio Laptop with Windows 7″ (ad# 53007671). After contacting her on email she sent me her (07815708364). Foolishly I transferred the money to the bank account: “Name: Mrs C da Silva, Bank: Abbey, Account number:20827596, Sort Code: 090127 for the item to be posted to me. After she received my money she did not get back nor did she reply to emails.
So you have been warned.
My sister in law nearly fell for this scam she was seeling a playstation 3 on ebay. same thing happened a new user bought it and wanted it posting out to nigeria, when i saw nigeria alam bells started ringing so i emailed him stating item will not be posted till we recieve payment. he then replied he’d payed through paypal, we then recieved an email from paypal (fake) that they had recieved the money and it was in a holding account we need to post the item and obtain a tracking number once the tracking number is logged into paypal it is only then that they will release the money this was to safegaurd the buyer and the seller.
Luckily the man at the post office new my sisiter in law and advised her not to post and gave us the tracking number stickers. he told us to input these and see what happenes. in mean time we recieved an email from ebay (fake) saying we have a warning as we have not posted the item..The whole point is if you look at the email addresses they are not ebay or paypal email addresses. Be really careful.

I nearly fell for exactly the same scam as Maddison,
same man: David Forsyth
Email address: ship.postmenn@representative.com and dforsyth23@gmail.com
If either contact you AVOID!!!!!
I received:
Hello, I was just browsing through gumtree to see if i can get a very
good and nice item for a very good friend and a colleague of mine who
has just been posted abroad on a training course on Environmental
pollution while i am being posted to America on a training course on
Population so we are into exchange of gifts with each other, and i
came across your lovely item.
I want to know if the item is in its top condition,I will like you to
help me send the item down to my friend in Lagos Nigeria 23401 on my
behalf as gift as i am due to leave for Asia soon so won’t be able to
receive the item here in the state..I will be offering you 50 pounds
for the postage via Royal Mail International Signed For,with p&p, so i
will quickly want you to get back to me with the total cost including
your pay pal e-mail and your gumtree item number and your full name so
that i can make the payment asap.
Hope to read from you soon…
God bless.
I then replied not knowing it was a scam however was slightly suspecisous!!! We agreed the payment and i then recieved an email, that’s name states: “service@paypal.co.uk” however this is not the email address this is just the name the actual email address is post.menn@representative.com and this can be viewed when clicking on the name, whereas if it is paypal they state service@paypal.co.uk as name and address!!! The email stated that:
“Dear NAME,
Thank you for using Pay Pal for your on line auctions. We at Pay Pal are ensuring that all our customers and auction site are fraud free.
We want you to know that you have a ***PENDING*** payment of £200.00 and we are still waiting for you to send the shipment reference number to us so that we can credit your account with your ***PENDING*** payment.once you post the item you will be given a receipt at the post office on the receipt you will find a barcode, that what you will need to send to us for verification and clearance of your money.
If you have any question about your payment contact us our representative on:ship.postmenn@representative.com or +44 702-401-0914
Thank you for using Pay Pal!
The Pay Pal Team.”
I then noticed this was a scam and went to the post office to check and they advised me not to send it as:
1. Paypal NEVER HOLD PAYMENT
2. It was to NIGERIA
I gained a ref code from the post office to see if the money would enter my account, and if so to then send the item. I sent off the ref number and still NO money added…SCAM!!!
Look out for threats as i got threaten to be blocked from PAYPAL…..LIES….!!!
Just make sure that you check the email address, and also the poor english is a dead give away!!! Also note paypal emails dont look anything like the emails being received!!! Be careful i was nearly scammed!!!

BE CAREFULL EVERYONE
They’re still at it. watch out for missmorissandra@gmail.com and the fake nigeria thing. You have to take potential buyers seriously but common sense tells you when somethings wrong. Is there anything else that they can try and do (apart from fake PP email) if they did get your email address and name?
ya! Even i got a fishy reply from this guy – john.mcpherson23@gmail.com
BEWARE if u also get a mail from him……
Okay mate, thanks for your response, i really want to buy this item off you but i want it for my friend who has just been posted to West Africa on a training course, i want to send it as a surprise Birthday Present, i’ll be offering you £30 for the postage cost….i would have loved to collect and post it myself but i’m not in the UK presently, i’m in Finland on a business trip, so i’ll really be happy if you can help me out. Cheers,
John
Beware of John McPherson, James McMurray and Sarah Wealth. Only became suspicious after all three people had requested my items to go to them same area..Nigeria..and checked it out!
Luckily I didnt lose out in nearly £400 worth of goods. Something must be done about this, especially for the people that may be more trusting in others than myself when it comes to selling and buying over the internet. Totally unacceptable.
Also got one of those Nigeria ones from David Forsyth. Thank god I just read this, cos I was about to think about selling to him!
Yes same thing just happened to me. The adress that was sent was customers_helplink@mail2consultant.com .
I didnt fall for it. I checked my pay pal and nothing was there. was a con. He e mailed me with 3 different e mail adds all with anita as the first name and a different surename lol.
May these ppl burn in hell.
Just had a similar email from “David Forsyth” on belhalf of Anuoluwa Lekan in Nigeria pretending to have paid for purchase of a Wii console. Do keep an eye out for this folks. Original email attached for reference.

anyway, stay frosty
yes we have had the same with the kimtom email. GUMTREE should so something so that they are banned from being able to use this site. it really is disapointing.
I had the exact same e-mail as Tom got but the name and address they used was kimtom26@gmail.com. Unfortunately, I have read this posting and as a result, I am 1 Razr mobile phone less. Feel sick to the stomach as the money from that sale was going to buy my grandsons christmas present. I live on Incapacity Benefit and now can no longer afford to buy that present
In addition to my earlier post; I also got the PayPal holding money emails from an address that ended with @accountants.com
The Loser… opp’s!, I meant the User on here goes by the name: Laura Jade Paul
Email Address: cutegirl0204@gmail.com
I’ve just had the classic scam mail too…. someone in America who cant spell properly wants my Video Camera mailed to her son in Nigeria. The scam became apparant to me when she wrote this classic line about my VIDEO camera “i am looking much forward to him using it to take pictures”.
The thing is though, i did a Facebook search for the email used and it did come back with a profile!… could this be a new thing they are doing to gain trust?
I was selling my car on gumtree a few days ago. A guy called sodip abdul (i guess it’s a fake name) contact me and wanted to buy it without seeing it. He said he’s in California and wanted to buy a car before xmas and was willing to sort out shipping cost himself. He’s very eager to get my paypal details.
I thought it was very strange and look up the paypal scam and emailed him this page. He then never contact me again.
The details are
Name : Sodiq Abdul
Address : 6390 Parkcreek Cir,

State : California
Zip-Code : 95621

Hi – Hooray I saw this article. Egged on by my sister who is in east africa, who has just had £1400 taken from her account and spent on flights, I decided I didn’t feel great about this English sounding woman who was very willing to pay £1400 plus £100 p and p ( without me asking for it) for an advert on gumtree offering a ladies watch.
So far, this has been the correspondance:

Hi Teresa – sorry for the delay – we have paypal account but it needs to be linked to website and unfortunately I have been unwell, so not been in work, and unable to set it up properly – I will have this sorted this week – where are you wanting to send the watch to? And do you want me to take it off the website? ie are you certain that you wish to purchase it?

Hi Teresa – we have problems with paypal at the moment – can you please send a payment via credit card via telephone or via cheque? We cannot do a lot about the paypal problem at the moment, but can take other payment options. Can I ask, why it is so important that it is paid for via paypal?
I feel violated!!!
These are the two of them I received in one day:
1)john costne :Well thanks for the mail okay…………. i will love to come and pick it up but due to my work i am a busy man so and i will like to send the item to my friend who is transfer to West Africa so just get back to me with ur pay pal money request so that i can make the payment and also get back to me with the total amoun for the item and the shipping Asap. Thanks
MY REPLY: Hi!
I can bring it to you. Where ever are you, no problem. So you can pay cash then.
john costne : Well right now am not in UK for now..I can only get the payment to you through online transfer and PayPal is the most and reliable fastest payment online..You can get just get back to me with your PayPal money request and the total amount for the item and the shipping asap,So that i can make the payment possible.#
2): Thanks for your quick response. I was guessing what i could buy for a friend of mine who was posted to West Africa on a Christmas Gift. I’ll be needing your help with the postage abroad as i am presently in Finland on a business trip with my boss, so i’ll really be happy if you can help me out.
I will be offering you £50 for the postage cost via Royal Mail and i’ll paying through PayPal, because its the safest means of online payment. Kindly let me know your last asking
price for the item and send your PayPal e-mail address to send the payment to and your full name on PayPal. Hope to hear from you as soon as possible.
MY REPLY: Hi!
In Finland, good! Where exactly in Finland you are? I’m finnish, how do you like it? When you’ll be back I can meet you and we do the business.
I got no more relpys on this one, ahaa!
So it’s quite obvious what’s going on!
I have just had a similar attempt to scam me from a Liza Johnson at jliza42@yahoo.com asking me to send goods to;
Jones Benjamin
108 Akerele Street
Surulere Lagos
23401
Nigeria.
In her first e-mail her (or his) english was plausible but it deteriorated over subsequent e-mails which were little more than demands for my paypal details.
Bernard.
hello dear,i ll like to know if your item is still available?cos i really want to purchase it for my friend who is presently running a 7 months course in a school of Theology in nigeria and i will be paying you $300 usd via paypal including the shipping and handling cost,i would have love to come for pick up but presently am in sri lanka and very busy at work supervising some of our new employees.you can get back to me with the your paypal mail id for then payment asap
Oh! I’m not sure if I’m allowed to post email addresses here, but I will, and if someone want to delete it they can.
The funniest part of this whole thing was their fake email from Paypal. It was from (I kid you not): baba704real@gmail.com on behalf of Service@Paypal.co.uk
–LOL–
You’d reckon Paypal could stump up for an email system rather than relying on GMAIL accounts. –LOL–
Seems a bit pointless, but I’d thought I’d mention that I got one of these today. Selling a Projector on Gumtree. This thread says it all.
1. Is the item still available?
2. I can’t come and look at the item, since I’m out of the country at the moment.
3. I’m buying it for my cousin in Nigeria.
4. Can you send me your Paypal ID.
Now…. this thing is I don’t even have a Paypal account. And by this time I’d already twigged something was up. So I *pretended* to create a Paypal account, and sent them my (fake) ID.
Within fifteen minutes I got an “email from Paypal” saying on receipt of proof of shipping they would release the funds – which were 80 quid MORE than the item had been posted at.
So yeah – everything in this thread played out exactly as stated elsewhere. I’m Internet aware, and suspected a scam right away. Did a Google, found this thread, and the rest is history………
Mind you – I still want to sell the projector. –LOL–
….One other thing. If you receive any emails from paypal with the suffix .co.uk – they are fake. Emails from PayPal are always .com. Best thing to do is to email all your contacts about their scam and get your contacts to email their contacts the same information. Eventually, everyone will get to know about it and they will give up. Knowledge is power!
I was selling my mobile phone through Gumtree as I was scammed on Ebay. The same person who scammed me on Ebay had just tried to scam me again on Gumtree – giving me the same address to send the item (the same international shipping thingy from Paypal). I sent the emails to PayPal (the real one) and sent David Forsyth an email saying “I’ve forward your address to the Nigerian authorities and PayPal. God Bless.” lol. You’d think they would have caught these criminals by now though wouldn’t you?

Hi, I have received two of these emails for a car which i’m selling on Gumtree from someone using two different email addresses. Thought it seemed strange so looked it up before sending Paypal info, thought it strange too that they didn’t went to look at car before making payment. In the first email they did ask what my price was which also is clearly stated on ad. I’m glad I read up on this before forwarding Paypal details. I have found all the above posts on this very helpfull. Thank you.
I was offered twice what I asked for for an item and the person who was offering it has used 2 different emails so far so i decided against selling to him after seeing this I am glad now thanks to all for the warnings
hi, i put a gold chain up for sale, they told me it was for a friend and sent me 650 for it straight away pending code for shipping, i nearly fell for it , very lucky, but how do they make 650 pound show on your paypal account, and they wanted it sent too…….you guest it nigeria!! CAnt any one do anything about it? i mean these people are scum!!
Be Gumtree Wise and do safe transaction.
I reported this to Paypal and they verified that it is a sacam email.
Please do send paypal emails to spoof@paypal.com and they will respond fairly quickly with in 30 mts.
Cheers
I was also subject to an attempted PayPal scam earlier today. I had two replies to my ad, one seemed genuine, the other was obviously a load of nonsense from Nigeria( please I am working abroad send shoes to bla bla bla and I will pay by Pay Pal …)from a guy calling himself Aaron Mullings (good old Nigerian name)… The more plausible one still didnt quite ring true but I did put in a PayPal request for the money. The fake Pay Pal website came back… How do they do that? The fake site betrayed itself by a grammar mistake in the scrolling screen, and I`ve never seen this before on a PayPal. So, this guy was calling himself Hilary Simon (from Nigeria). What do these people hope to gain? Access to yr PayPal details? Your internet info, like passwords? Do please let me know if my security has been affected by my reading these e-mails, and replying.
This is the email I received, please be aware of fake paypal emails!!

Please be aware of this!!!
Thank you Edward,
Just had Chris Shaw try it with me too!
marvinrose10@yahoo.com , A SCAM ARTIST from nigeria , asking me to give him my paypal info i sent him a request for the money through paypal, he says hes buying the item for a friend notice ” the item ” also he couldnt write in proper english , another thing is he is from west africa and wanted it delivered by royal mail courier services, which was a fortune , so i said ok and instead of 850 iv put 1500 the cost for delivery and my item. watch the email people dont get scammed. Im being careful , going to wait until i get the money through in my hand first then ill send away.
i was a victm of this i advertised my wii for sale on gumtree and got a reply from chrishaw77_1@yahoo.co.uk i was sending the item to nigeria but as i thought funding was available ie phishing emails stated i had received funds i sent it but the guy got gready and tried to have me refund him £150 back i got suspisios and phone paypal they new nothing of this the police stated that due to me getting my item back as i was tracking it and stoppped it before it left country there was no fraud but folks thats his email adress and he is still using it so BEWARE OF HIM the emails were genuine i to have now downloaded and use iconix it works CHRISSHAW77 REMEMBER HIM i even got his phoine number but polic ewill not do anything any ideas
I’ve had three attempts at scamming me with my Net Book luckily I had the sense not to fall for it, I contacted PayPal and they sent me a message advising me to add “ICONIX” it’s the best thing I ever did.
Anyone worried about being scammed really should consider installing it, it shows the real sites from the fake ones, thus putting an end to these scum bags trying to get stuff for free!
I found a genuine buyer who was happy to pay by Postal Order and it arrived the next day. There as some honest folk out there, just a shame some are just thieves, I hope no one else falls for their scams
Here’s the address http://www.iconix.com/
Had one today offering £150 for a £70 iPod, and wanting it sent before releasing the money. Yeah right. Cheeky s*d now says he’ll contact the “fraud authority” if I don’t ship it to him!
Hi
I had had an e-mail asking to buy my laptop and the will pay for it to be delivered to ESSEX. So i thought it was ok..
So I told him it would be fine and to transfer the funds into my girlfriends PAYPAL account.
I then checked her paypal account and there was the money but it was pending.
I then recived an e-mail from which I thought was PAYPAL saying that for the funds to be released i must send the laptop and get a tracking number and reply with the information. So thats what I did!!!!
Then I get another e-mail stating that the buyer has paid me over £300 too much and I now have to refund Him the money but send it too Nigeria by western union,,,
Thats when the alarm bells started to ring.
So Ive now cancelled the paypal request for the money because its justb not gunna happpen and Ive also stopped my laptop from being delivered to Essex..
These people are very good at scamming you out of your money and all the e-mails you get from them look real…
So just be careful. I was fooled and i always thought I was pretty streetwise…
hi there,
i got an email yesterday for my netbook. it said your item. today i get a reply and they r gonna give me 150 for it and not 110. they want to do paypal. I stated i want cash only, asked where they were from and the give away, why do they have 12 digits in their phone number when there are only supposed to be 11. nuggets eh? my netbook is staying put just now
Hi there
I often get these paypal mails and the person often asks my asking price, even though it is clearly stated on my ad. They often pelt me with a million offer mails too, which is equally bugging.
I just reply to them with an extreme amount, for instance last time for an ad of mine that had an asking price of £100 – when asked by the scammer what my asking price was, I replied that it was £1600.
They stopped mailing, and I get less of that now
I’ve placed one of my first adverts here, to sell a Canon 40D SLR kit. I received quite a few replies but all apart from one just said “I want to buy your item” and then went on to request paypal info.
In my opinion, someone spending a few hundred on a camera is going to ask some questions about it, not just offer the asking price straight away and spend most of the email talking about paypal.
So I’ve deleted them all.
My partner recieved one of these replies to one of her ads earlier today. Fortunately she is wise enough to realise that something wasn’t right about it. It’s a pity that nothing can really be done about these scammers. The police don’t seem interested, and even if they were what could they do?
Education is the best policy. Could the site not put a disclaimer or a header on all pages warning about these scams. It doesn’t need to be big or longwinded. A few lines of warning that stands out would do. Maybe it will also deter the scammers if they think that everyone is alert to them. Personally I don’t think that a blog page or a link is enough of a warning n
Scammers change their names and emails daily, can’t work out why the police can’t trace the IP address or are they all working from internet cafe’s???
TRUE ‘if it looks too good to true it probably isnt’ if in doubt get the buyer to send a building society cheque as these can’t be taken back (check it’s not a forgery) or just get them to send good old cash by special delivery it can then be insured.
Nigera’s got to be one of the biggest NO NO’s … why do they all use the same story????????
A sure way to detect a scam is when the answer to your add is ‘is the ITEM still available’ it’s the word ITEM that gives it away, they can’t even be bothered to check what your selling.
Agreed it’s a scammers marketplace … just be very careful .. good luck.
Hi there

Avoid
Nigeria based scam using paypal!
Micheal Brennan itscarinpet@yahoo.com
Its best to AVOID PAYPAL at ALL costs, because some people will take your goods and tell paypal the item either didn’t arrive or was faulty or some other lame excuse which paypal will take in, paypal ie ebay will then re-imburse the buyer..
so it wont be a surprise if you hear more and more people advising you to avoid the ebay-paypal trap, sell face to face is the best way

Guys, I have recently put my beautiful laptop for sale on Gumtree. I got responses from people asking me to send it to west Africa. 2-3 different guys contacted me with different version of same sort of story. They were pushing me to log on to pay pal and request for money. Surprisingly, 1 person was ready to offer 130 pounds more than it’s worth. I have ignored these stupids. Below their emails for your info:

Hi folks, I am trying to sell a PS3 and keep getting emails from people asking to send it to Africa as a gift etc. I was already aware of this scam as they do it on ebay! They seem to target expensive items phones, games consoles and PC’s, laptops etc they are very good at sending fake paypal emails. If you receive any email of this kind just ignore it or tell them you won’t accept paypal you want to sell it for cash. Thats why I stopped using ebay to be honest and now its spoiling the gumtree advertising too. Its such a pity that these scam artist are ruining it for everyone how can people expect to be trusted when you have people like this trying to steal your expensive items! BEWARE EVERYONE only sell face to face do not post!
jon your spot on there i bought 2 things from this site and met face to face and that is the best way but you are right thats the way i would buy something from this site any one that got scammed it to late thankfuly it never happened to me
We recently advertised a leather jacket, same thing – watch out for Dr Frank Fabanachi. Offers far more for the item to cover postage, making it seem a really good deal, but also cant send it himself, wants it sent on to a friend in another country. Thankfully we twigged something was suspious so haven’t followed through.
Hi I got these two people desperately getting me to send things to West Africa, I have emails saying the payment has gone through but it doesn’t show the account info, they have been very generous wh the ostage and I am getting suspicious, anyone had the same problem??

BEWARE OF PAYPAL
PAYPAL TOOK AN UNATHORISED DIRECT DEBIT FROM MY BANK, JUST BY CHANCE I WAS ABLE TO STOP IT. WHEN I COMPLAINED TO THEM THEY ASKED FOR TRANSACTION NUMBER WHICH I COULDNT GIVE AS NOTHING SHOWING UP ON SUMMARY ONLY MY BANK STATEMENT AFTER MANY EMAILS WAS GETTING NOWHERE UNTIL THEY DECIDED IT WAS A SHORTFALL OF PAYMENT TO A SELLER. SO IF I OWED THEM ANYTHING WHY DIDNT THEY TAKE IT FROM MY FIRST POINT OF PAYMENT WHICH IS PAYPAL AND I HAD ENOUGH IN THAT TO COVER THE PAYMENT EVEN IF I HAD OWED IT TO ANYONE…MORE EMAILS TELLING ME TO CALL THEM, MORE EMAILS TELLING THEM TO PHONE ME THEN LOW AND BEHOLD THEY TOOK THE UNAUTHORISED DIRECT DEBIT AGAIN BUT NOT IN PAYPALS NAME THIS TIME IN THE NAME OF THE SELLER I HAD BOUGHT FROM. I CONTACTED THIS SELLER AND SHE CONFIRMS THAT SHE WAS PAID IN FULL 3 WEEKS BEFORE AND SHE HAD NOTHING IN HER ACCOUNT FROM THE DIRECT DEBIT TAKEN IN HER NAME FROM MY BANK ACCOUNT AND WILLING TO STATE THAT TO PAYPAL IF NEED BE..ANOTHER EMAIL ANOTHER BACK TELLING ME TO CALL THEM, WHY SHOULD I THEY ARE THE ONES TAKING DIECT DEBITS FROM BANK ACCOUNTS THAT ONLY SHOW ON YOUR BANK STATEMENT AND NOT ON YOUR PAYPAL STATEMENT, IT WASNT FOR A GREAT AMOUNT BUT THAT ISNT THE ISSUE ITS THE FACT THEY CAN TAKE FROM YOUR BANK WITHOUT AUTHORISATION. SO BEWARE CHECK YOUR BANK STATEMENTS AGAINST YOUR PAYPAL SUMMARY YOU MAY JUST FIND YOU THEY HAVE TAKEN AN UNATHORISED DIRECT DEBIT FROM YOUR BANK ACCOUNT THAT DOESNT SHOW ON YOUR PAYPAL ACCOUNT

I’VE BOUGHT AND SOLD MANY ITEMS ON GUMTREE, ALL FACE TO FACE AND FOR CASH. YOU WOULD NT SEND MONEY OR POST AN ITEM IF SOMEONE TOLD YOU YOUR CHEQUE WAS IN THE POST , IF IT WAS A RESPONSE TO A CLASSIFIED AD IN A NEWSPAPER. tHIS IS ONLY AN ELECTRONIC BERSION OF THE SAME THING, JUST BECAUSE ITS ON LINE DOESNT MEANIT SAFE, I WOULD SAY IT MAKES IT MORE DANGEROUS.
look for Andy Cole, try get item throu paypal and pay extra£100 for sending fee…unusual, suspected scum…becurefull
you can get a brand new acer laptop in ireland for 500 with a 500gb hard drive and i wouldnt hand over 600st its is a scam did you get the laptop propley not they took the money and ran any one thats buys anything from this site all i can say sorry for your lose but at least you will know where you stand and that you have learned from it if you know the person that is selling well you should be ok but a stranger its a no go

hey guys got scammed by this two,man sounded realistic until he started asking for refund checks to be sent via western union money transfer before i could access my funds, was lucky really coped it before i lost a bunch , but items had been sent as he had sent me a mail showing me money in my account, email he is using is chrishaw778@yahoo.com, he asks you to send items to nigeria to a guy he claims is his son and to mark package a present from dad. do not respound to him its a scam.
i had the same scam this morning for a £600 laptop!!!!!!!!!!!
It is frustrating as some businesses like mine are having a rough ride because people are miss using paypal. Now I advertise my website only and not the individual items that I sell. Why? as on my website we have 2 payment methods: Paypal & Nochex

Ok i have been scammed as well, i have lost £80. DO NOT USE PAYPAL FOR ANYTHING, EBAY, GUMTREE…ANYTHING. THEY ARE A WASTE OF TIME. THEY TOLD ME THEY KNOW I AM BEING SCAMMED BUT THEY CANT HELP ME! AM SO ANGRY!!
Steve, my recommendation would be to not go ahead with it. Gumtree is about trading face-to-face
I too was nearly scammed today by a james goody@hotmail. I twigged when the name of buyer came up marry james, 6 lynch walk, darrec street lewisham, london I have been scammed by a Mr James already last year. he sent an very real looking email from paypal saying funds would be released when he got a tracking no. from me. how can these scumbags get away with this.
Can somebody help me please. i want to buy a phone on here, but the seller only accepts paypal, everything sounds good but i rang paypal and they said i am only covered if the phone does not turn up. If it turns up but is not as described, then they cant help me. What shall i do?
I sell my Ipod and ps3 to dforsyth15@yahoo.com and i got all my money from him and pay pal also let me understand that there is so many fraud on here that people report about seller stealing buyer’s money
hi jon yes show some people a bargain

Watch out for “gidy bear”
Still trying it on…

hi beware of sombody going by the name of brian conway (gidybear22@gogglemail.com) i had a phone advitised on gumtree he responded to the ad saying he was interested and would pay through paypal, paypal(fake paypal)sent an email stating i had new funds from him and that i would need to send them the items traking number to release the funds,so i posted the item, sent the traking number and waited for funds, then to later find out it was a scam im so annoyed as it was an expensive phone almost brand new and would rather have let my 3 year old nephew play with it then let scamers have it.so always check that emails claiming to be from paypal etc are legit even if they look legit please dont let what happened to me happen to you.
Same thing happened to me. Guy called HRIS SHAW. said he had paid through paypal. got some really authentic looking mails from paypal but thank god I didnt post the item. sent him a mail telling im I was on to him and he had the nerve to reply”what the hell you on about will check with paypal. They confirmed to me it was a scam. cant believe people go to such lengths.
i lost £200 on here yesterday because someone asked for paypal up front and refused to let me see the goods before i paid. he promised the earth, and has refused to do anything he promised to do. Look out for ads that want money up front, even if they promise what you wanted to buy at half the normal price… £200 is a huge fee when you’re just a houswife. I am so upset
hi a guy said he was buying my ps3 yesterday he payed by paypal the funds never came through i never sent im not that daft been with paypal for years watch out guys email is gidybear22@googlemail.com brian conway so what out mark
Hey Glen. Yeah never fill in your personal details from an email request, whether it be from Paypal, Ebay, your bank or anywhere else. These organisations would never request this via email.
there is also a scam where they send you an email saying that someone has attempted to log onto your paypal account from another ip and they ask you to type in your password to confirm.
Pay Pal is normally so great, it’s annoying that there’s lots of Spammers ruining it. I was getting loads of “click on this email from PayPal and update your card deals” . I’m not stoopid but a lot of them look very real.
Sorry to hear it mate. Tell everyone you know so they don’t fall into the trap. When trading with individuals online, the face to face rule is best.
Yeah, too late though, i had games up for sale on gumtree and i got done out of €100. Sick i was
