STARTING A BAND IN THREE STEPS: THE GUMTREE GUIDE

So you wanna start a rock ‘n’ roll band? A jazz band? A ukulele orchestra? Gumtree can help. In just three easy steps we can turn your musical dreams into reality. We can’t guarantee you a Grammy, but we can get you up and running quicker than you can say ‘top of the pops.’ And the best part is – we can help you do it for free!

STEP ONE: FIND THE PERFECT LINE-UP

1,000s of musicians up and down the country use Gumtree as their first port of call when they’re looking to get a band together. Need a drummer? Head to our Community section and check out our Musicians Available tab. From beginner garage bands just starting out to established artists looking for seasoned session talent, we’ve got sections for drummers, singers, guitarists, producers and more – the perfect bandmate could be right there right now.

Or maybe you’re new to town and want to join a band that’s already up and gigging, or just want to put your talent out there and meet some likeminded music bods? Head to our Music, Bands and Musicians section and you can post an ad to let the world know about you and your music. You can upload photos, videos, and links to music you already have posted online so users can really get to know you – and all for free.

STEP TWO: GET THE GEAR

You’ve got the band together, but do you have the gear to get you gigging? Here’s where our Musical Instruments and DJ Equipment bit comes in. Whatever you’re looking for – guitars to sitars, DJ decks to rare vintage synths, have a search. Musicians sell anything and everything on Gumtree every day, and you can search by postcode to bargain items close enough for you to pick up easily in person.

Want to save even more? Check out our Swap Shop and Freebies section too. One man’s trash is another man’s treasure, and you never know what other musicians need or no longer want – maybe you can swap and save, or even pick up an old piano for free. And if you’ve got some musical gear to get rid of yourself, it’s always free to list your items for sale on Gumtree, so you can make some dosh to get that demo made.

STEP THREE: FIND A PLACE YOU CAN TURN IT UP TO 11

If you’re lucky enough to live in a cave in the middle of nowhere then you can get started right away. But the majority of bands have the neighbours to think about, so you’re probably on the lookout for a place to practice, for as cheap as possible. Practise rooms and recording studios all over the country post ads on Gumtree every day. Head to our Community or Property to Rent section, search for rehearsal rooms, and you’re guaranteed to find somewhere near you. Use our handy postcode search filter to narrow things right down and find the closest practise pads to you – that way you won’t have to hump your gear too far.

There you go! Easy as one, two, three, Gumtree’s done the hard work for you! Well, we can’t do the hours of practise, the songwriting, or the gruelling world tour for you (although we can help you find a tourbus), but you can’t say we haven’t done our bit to get you started. It’s how bands get started every day, the Gumtree way.

Easy buy, easy sell is what we do, and you’ll find a step-by-step guide to posting ads that pack a punch right here.
