Declutter competition winner – day with Jamie Breese

Here at Gumtree.com we love a good declutter!  As you’ve probably seen we’ve been busy trying to help you convert your clutter to cash – with the help of TV’s declutter expert Jamie Breese.

Thanks to everyone that entered our competition to win a declutter session with Jamie.  Entries flooded in from all over the UK but there could only be one winner, and on Wednesday 2 May Tony Stevens from Poole received a personal visit from Jamie Breese to help him turn his clutter to cash, and help free up space in his home.

Tony didn’t hold much hope for his clutter, expecting that it might sell for around £10, however after several hours of rigorous decluttering with Jamie by his side, the value was totting up to much more than he expected.

Speaking about day with Tony, TV’s declutter expert Jamie Breese said: “We had a brilliant day in Poole, the sun was out, the gloves were on, and the boxes were ready to pack up Tony’s clutter.  While apprehensive at first, Tony explained how we would love to set up his own business but needs a cash injection to build a website and print business cards.  The challenge was on.

“We started off having a great rummage in his loft – it turned out to be a gadget graveyard with everything from an old TV, hi-fi, printer, X-Box console and games, sewing machine, as well as the usual old clothes, holdalls, and garden furniture up there.  Within an hour we had worked out what to sell, and also set aside some items for the tip.

“Downstairs we started in the lounge, and the total value of Tony’s clutter soon started to increase.  As well as hundreds of CDs and DVDs, we also found several highly-collectible items including a 1980s Royal Doulton Bunnykins money box, a fully-functioning post-war German camera, and a relatively rare Liberty’s hammered tudric pewter jug.”

In total, Jamie Breese valued the unwanted and unused items in Tony’s lounge and loft at approximately £750 – which is enough to get his business off the ground.  Tony promised Jamie that he would continue with the clear out, move to other rooms, and start selling the items on Gumtree – converting his clutter to cash.

Speaking about the experience Tony Stevens added: “It was a very informative and helpful day; I had no idea of the value of items that I’ve been hoarding for years.”

After just a few hours Tony had not only organised and sorted through his clutter but he had a mountain of treasures to sell and help him set-up his own business.  Recent research by Gumtree found that the average UK household sitting on a treasure trove of £3,540* worth of unwanted or unused items, so isn’t it about time you decluttered your house and turned the hard work into cold hard cash?

Gumtree.com hits 100million ads!

We’re really excited to let you know that an advert for a second-hand television has gone down in history as our 100 millionth ad on Gumtree.com.

The 100 millionth ad was for a second-hand television in London in April, 2012.

Regular Gumtree user Istvan Nagy, 32, posted the ad while he was clearing out his spare room.

The 16” Samsung TV with DVD playerVHS player, and remote control sold for a tenner in North London. Juan Chandler, a local web developer, bought the TV less than two days after posting the ad. Little did either of these individuals know of the history they were making.

To celebrate (being the generous types we are), we have given both Istvan and Juan brand new TV to help mark this landmark occasion.

Istvan Nagy said: “I wasn’t sure what to expect when I got the call, but I’m definitely glad that I picked up my phone.  I did see a really big number at the bottom of the ad when I posted it but had no idea it meant that this was the 100 millionth ad. I’m really pleased to be part of Gumtree history.”

Juan, a web developer who bought the TV was also thrilled to be part of our Gumtree history: “This particular TV caught my eye because for £10, it was excellent value.  I’ve found lots of bargains on the site in the past so it’s a real treat to have come across the 100 millionth ad.  I’m thrilled with the new TV from Gumtree too! I would have been happy with the £10 one, but this new one will look great in my living room.”

From one to 100 million in 12 years, we can’t wait to see who snaps up the one billionth ad on Gumtree.

The voices behind the Gumtree ad (part 2)

Last week, we introduced you to Karla and Soma, some of the stars in our TV ad. Today, meet Emer and Jonn.

Jonn DunnJonn
Jonn is a musician who plays, in his words, any music from “sleazy fuzzy rock n’ roll to barren acoustic old-time country”.

Q: What’s the most interesting thing you’ve bought on Gumtree?
A sheet music stand that I bought from a travelling nomad now serves double-duty as a kitchen roll dispenser and a flagpole.

Q: What is it about Gumtree that you like?
The great array of services offered: buying/selling items, finding/offering jobs, renting/buying property. A resourceful community’s at the root (excuse the pun)of Gumtree.

Q: What’s your favourite karaoke song?
If I had to choose a song to sing right this second, it’d be Eternal Flame by The Bangles. Top tune. Seriously.

Q: What can we find you doing on weekends?
On weekends, I like getting the vinyl records on the phonograph and have a boogie. Nothing like a good ole jukejoint.

EmerEmer
Waitress by day, musician by night, Emer recently graduated from music college and wants to start a band.

Q: So, a band. What kind of band?
As long as it’s a band that doesn’t take itself too seriously and makes music people want to dance to, then I’d be happy. I’d love to be in a band like The Commitments.

Q: What have been your favourite acting gigs?
My two favourite shows I’ve been in were The Producers with Leeds Amateur Operatic Society, and Oliver! with Londonderry Musical Society.

Q: What was it like to do the recording for the TV ad?
I had such a good time recording for the TV ad. I went into the recording studio and met some people from the ad agency, who showed me the ad and gave me a script for it. Then I went into the booth and said each phrase from the ad in as many different ways as I could. I really didn’t expect them to choose me as one of the voices so that was a nice surprise!

Q: What is it about Gumtree that you like?
I like the way Gumtree is really local. You can check out what’s going on in your area and get involved easily. There’s so much variety as to what you can use Gumtree for too; you can apply for jobs there, buy or sell things, look for activities and fun things to do near where you live. It’s really good!

The voices behind the Gumtree TV ad (part 1)

A while back, we placed an ad on Gumtree asking for help to voice our TV ad. We thought you’d like to learn a little more about the voices behind the ad. Meet Karla and Soma. They all use Gumtree, like you and me.

Karla WilliamsKarla
Karla is a freelance film, theatre and music journalist. She uses Gumtree to look for work.

Q: What are some memorable interviews you’ve done?
I really liked meeting the JLS boys (although I was a little nervous!). Janet Jackson was lovely and Tyler Perry very laidback and funny. British Actors Ansu Kabia and Kobna Holdbrook-Smith were also really good to talk to. Plus Alexandra Burke was lovely and very nice to me.

Q: Where can we see more of your work?
I’ve written for a number of publications including Flavour Magazine, British Theatre Guide and Theater Mania in New York. I have also done some presenting work on Colourful Radio where I also have a weekly DVD review slot and a twice monthly Food & Drink slot.

Q: What was it like to do the recording for the TV ad?
Very laidback actually. It was a nice calm environment, the producers were really friendly and informative and I felt at ease.

Q: What’s the best Gumtree ad you’ve seen?
The ads that try to mislead you always make me laugh. For example, the ads looking for street fundraisers but try to make out that the position is for the best job in the world. It isn’t!

Q: Where’s your favourite local hangout?
I do like the vibe at The Young Vic Theatre or around The National Theatre on the Southbank.

SomaSoma
Soma is in the UK on a working holiday. He’s used Gumtree to look for a flat.

Q: What was it like to do the recording for the TV ad?
It was immense fun. They led me to the studio, like one you see in the making-of footage of music videos. Everything around you is so professional. The people were very nice and friendly, and this made things a lot easier. It’s much simpler to talk naturally if you know they are not breathing down your neck.

Q: What is it about Gumtree that you like?
I am very grateful that it does not come with any paid membership, because such useful sites that deal with such huge traffic usually want something for their own. Gumtree doesn’t prey on us poor people, who are in desperate need of a flat or a job, or anything. I also like that it’s very simple to use.

Q. What kind of work have you found so far?
I find jobs every day with Gumtree, apply for them, but they are mostly filled by the time I get through to them… I’ve been found by a few modelling agencies, the rest is up to God (and the castings).

Q: What’s the best holiday you’ve been on?
Definitely Venice. I was lucky enough to take part in a Carnival there, and that is just incomparable to anything else. Wandering around the city in masquerade, while there are thousands of people with their faces covered, and to dance with masked girls…it gives you the feeling you are living a few centuries earlier.

Q: What’s the best Gumtree ad you’ve seen?
It was one of a would-be employee. The headline was something like this: Ghostbuster looking for work. Now that’s new. Not to mention the description and the picture provided. It sure made my day.

A preview of our first ever TV ad

Do you remember our tube, bus and newspaper ads? Now, we’re taking over your telly! It’s the first time Gumtree has ever done a TV ad and we’re really excited about it.

We wanted to involve you in our ad, so we put an ad on Gumtree for some voice talent a few weeks ago. Thank you for all your wonderful responses. We managed to narrow our choices down to 4 voices. Wondering who they are? Meet our stars, Karla, SomaJohn and Emer.

And now the ad’s ready. We’ve decided to let you have a preview of it first before it goes live on TV. What do you think of it?

Superheroes needed to protect the neighbourhood

'Darkslay' wants superheroes to join him on his questHave you got what it takes to be a superhero? Local Londoner ‘Darkslay’ is vowing to protect his neighbourhood in Southeast London for the general good. He wants to “bring a little hope back to the city” and has an ad out for fellow wannabe superheros to join him on his quest, much like Shadow Hare in the US.

Darkslay’s not the only one who wants to connect with people in his local area. We did a study recently, and found that 81% of Brits want people to be more friendly with their neighbours. In fact, 76% of young people want to get to know more people in their area – more so than any other age bracket. Also, over half of city-dwellers said they’ve changed their behaviour towards being more neighbourly.

We think, with superhero costume or not, there’s no better way to look out for your neighbour. So, anyone want to help Darkslay out?

Check out Darkslay’s ad

Forget the hung parliament, it’s Friday

10downingStrWith all this talk about a hung parliament, Labour being out of the door and what this means for our future, we’ve decided that this is way too serious for a Friday afternoon. Looks like some others think so too, judging by these great political spoof ads we found today:

Quick sale on a house in Westminster
‘Gordon’ is looking for a quick sale on his spacious 6 bedroom house, as he’s making a quick exit to Kirkcaldy. Still not sure where this house is? Look at the map.

Political party at half price
Want to own your own political party? This one’s up for sale at a bargainous half price offer.

Nice to see people still have their humour intact.

Pirates are storming Gumtree

Want to be a pirate?Ahoy me maties. Talk Like a Pirate Day this year may be over, but the pirate-loving continues. What are the chances that we have not one, but TWO pirate-related listings at the moment?

Jack Sparrow impersonator
This ad claims to have available “one of the best Jack Sparrow impersonators in the UK” for, well, adventures. Further exploration of their services reveals Jack is (unsurprisingly) up for anything – children’s parties, corporate and charity events.  And shiver me timbers!  This Jack Sparrow is also fully covered by insurance and police-checked. Awwwww.

Be a pirate
On the flip side, or should that be port side, a blue chip FTSE 500 ship is currently recruiting . We’re not sure what the tale is here, but the listing is the real treasure. Duties include “drinking Rum” and shouting “Arrrrgh” a lot. Hmmm, that’s making some of us here at the Gumtree office consider a change in career (kidding!). Anyone planning on applying?

Are you ready for Halloween?

Are you ready for Halloween? What are you doing this Halloween? Apparently Michael Jackson tributes are tipped to be this year’s big Halloween theme, so expect to see plenty of Thriller-style zombies and one-gloved moonwalkers out on the night of the 31st.

Whether you want to get dressed up, find a party, or even spoil your pooch, there are plenty of Halloween listings popping up on Gumtree.

Can you do the Thriller dance?, London
This London pair is looking for someone to teach them the Thriller routine to entertain their party guests

Handmade Halloween dog treats, £4, London
Halloween isn’t just for little tots. Your dog can enjoy it too. The little ghost ones had us going “Awwwwww”

Halloween costume party 31st Oct 2009, London
Got a prize-winning costume sorted? Then this London bar has a £100 bar tab up for grabs

Baby toddler fleece romper suits Halloween costumes, £14, London
Because it’s fun to dress small children as bumble bees and lions

Wanted: real or prop coffin for Halloween
, £5, Birmingham
We suspect this will result in a last minute Blue Peter job

Wanted: old black suit and white shirt, Birmingham

Size doesn’t matter as it will be “ripped to give it that dead corpse look”.
