In March 2000, at the height of the dot com boom, two men by the name of Simon Crookall and Michael Pennington, had an idea to set up a website to house classified ads for Londoners. Initially, those new to the city used it to find somewhere to live, someone to live with or something for the home. That was when the Gumtree community was born.
Some 11 years later, Gumtree.com is the UK’s number one classifieds site, spanning 48 cities across the UK and Ireland with some 34,000 new adverts each day and an impressive 13.7 million visitors every month. It’s the go-to place for everything from cars, jobs and flats to pets, furniture and tutors. And much more besides.
In recent years we’ve invested heavily in Gumtree’s attractiveness to visitors, making users journeys as fun, effective and easy as we can. Our national TV advertising and online marketing have helped us achieve a recent record of 11.1 million visitors in one week!
We’ll continue to grow and make improvements while sticking to our original aim of creating a quick and easy way for people to connect with the thing or person they want to find.
We’d like to thank the whole Gumtree community for getting us to where we are today and we all look forward to achieving even more together.
