A Guide to Board Games Available on GumtreeMonday 8 December 2014, by The Media Team
It’s Christmas! Time to battle your grandparents for prime Mayfair real estate…
It’s easy to overlook the time-honored charms of a good board game these days. Sure, the multimedia phantasmagoria of cutting edge video game technology might sometimes cast the scuffed old Trivial Pursuit box at the back of the cupboard in a less than dynamic light, but there are times – especially at Christmas – when board games really come into their own.
Trust us, this Christmas a game of Monopoly will unite several generations of the family more successfully than multiplayer FiFA.
If you’re looking for bargain board games this Christmas you’ve come to the right place – Gumtree has hundreds of listings so there’s something for everyone and if you’re not sure which is the right game for you we’ve put together a handy guide to the best board games available.
4 or more players.
Ages 12 and up
Pictionary is a guessing word game perfect for families with slightly older children.
In teams, players move around the board. Each square they land on has an instruction identifying which type of picture must be drawn. A team member must then guess the picture being drawn by their partner. The winner is the first team to reach the last square on the board.
Pictionary is a great family game, it’s fast paced and fun and more often than not will have everyone jumping up and down and laughing during play.
It’s not a game for the faint hearted and it can get very frustrating if your team member is terrible at drawing, however this can also be a source of hilarity.
For 2 to 6 players (teams allowed)
Ages 15 and up
Trivial pursuit is a general knowledge board game suitable for young people and adults.
Players move around the board and try to collect coloured wedges by correctly answering questions in the six categories (each with a corresponding colour) including: geography, entertainment, history, arts and literature, science and nature, and sports. To win the game a player must collect all the different coloured wedges and then correctly answer a final question from a category of the other players choosing.
You get to show off your general knowledge in front of family and friends.
There’s always the chance you might find out you’re not as clever as you think. Or you get bad questions. Always blame the questions.

Cranium is billed as ‘the game for your whole brain’ and is a board game based on Ludo. Players will need to use a wide variety of skills including creativity and general knowledge to compete.
Players move clockwise around the board and like in Pictionary, each square they land has an instruction for the team. In cranium however, these instructions are not limited to drawing. To win the game a team must get to Cranium Central™ before all the other teams and complete their final activity.
This is an exciting, fast paced game with so many variations on activities there will be something for everyone.
It’s impossible to play this game in a calm civilized manor.
For 2 to 6 players
Ages 8 and up
Monopoly is one of the most iconic and enduring board games out there. It’s an absolute classic and a firm favourite at Christmas.
Make your way around the board and purchase land, houses and hotels then charge the other players when they land on your property. The winner is the last player left after all the other players have gone bankrupt.
Most people already know how monopoly works and it’s a very simple game to set up. Younger children pick it up easily so it’s quick to get going even for beginners.
Clear your schedule as it can drag on. It can also lead to arguments if any of the players decide to cheat (I’m randomly looking at my brother right now).
For 2 to 4 players
Ages 8 and up
Scrabble is another iconic board game for people who want to exercise their minds when they play but don’t fancy general knowledge games.
Scrabble is a word game. Players pick tiles with letters on and attempt to make words with the tiles on the board. The winner is the person who has the highest score at the end of the game.
Scrabble is a lot of fun to play. It’s suitable for adults and children and will almost certainly help children build their vocabulary.
Players of a similar ability will have more exciting games.
